Software for cable planning in 3D: EPLAN Harness proD 2022
The new 2022 version of EPLAN Harness proD is here! Launched 11th February 2022, let's take the opportunity to dive into this latest innovation in detail.
As the Product Manager for EPLAN Harness proD since 2019, Lukas Menzel is an expert in the solution. In his blog, he provides an insight into the new functions and features.
Software explained in a nutshell: How cable planning works with EPLAN Harness proD
EPLAN Harness proD is a software solution for designing and documenting cables and wire harnesses in 3D. As a user, it offers you the following features:
- It is possible to determine the position of your electrical components in your mechanical 3D model and plan the cable routes.
Placement of electrical components and the laying of cables.Integration of the control cabinet in the cable planning of a machine.
- On this basis, you can derive cable production drawings directly. This allows you to pre-assemble cables and cable harnesses, resulting in faster and easier installation.

- Use electrotechnical details that have already been planned from EPLAN Electric P8 and EPLAN Pro Panel to expand the mechanical model.
Import the project from EPLAN Electric P8 into the Harness proD software environment.
- EPLAN also has a clever interface for you to import a 3D model from common MCAD systems.

With improved features, EPLAN Harness proD 2022 simplifies cable planning in 3D
The new version of EPLAN Harness proD has the same user interface design as the EPLAN Platform 2022 solutions. This means an appealing layout giving intuitive usability for experienced and new users. In addition, EPLAN Harness proD 2022 also offers you improved features such as the simplified design of cable routes and the optimised derivation of production drawings.
Optimised placement aids for the simple design of cable routes, e.g. in energy chains
The design of cable routes in a three-dimensional planning interface can initially be somewhat unfamiliar to electrical engineers who primarily work with two-dimensional circuit diagrams. In order to facilitate the change to the third dimension smoother, the movement of routings can be locked in the correct axis in EPLAN Harness proD 2022. This allows the cable routes to be laid in the right direction quickly and easily.

Tick the box and get started: Automated derivation of production drawings
Derived drawings can still be created singularly if a user wishes to check a single report. However, all of the derived drawings can now also be processed simultaneously with a simple checkbox.
The production drawings themselves are also easier to understand in the 2022 version. For example, rows within tables can be coloured so they are easier to read. In addition, the wire colour can now also be displayed alongside connectors and other connectable components for clearer understanding.
All production drawings can be commissioned at the same time via this checkbox.
Within production drawings, for example, the wire colour is now also displayed in tables with plugs.
From practice: Suncar relies on EPLAN software for engineering to develop emission-free electric drives
The start-up Suncar, founded at the ETH Zurich, focuses on the electrification of drives for mobile machines such as excavators. Engineering tools from Eplan support the Suncar developers in their work, including Eplan Harness proD: "The intuitive 3D environment of the Harness proD tool in particular makes it a lot easier for us to plan the cabling for the excavators. We can simulate the laying of the wiring harnesses in advance as a digital twin, discuss with the customer and work out the best solution together," says Stefan Schneider, founder and managing director of Suncar.
